Birch Basket
Birch Basket are produced by the dene people of fort Liard, known as ``the tropics of the north``. This is a small community near the legendary Nahanni national park reserve in the southwest corner of the Northwest Territories.
Birch bark is cut into pattern which are decorated either with dyed porcupine quills or by scraping away layers of the bark. A willow frame is placed around the top of the basket, then sewn into place with thin strips of white spruce root, using an awl to punch holes.
Each article is made from material gathered in the area and is produced in the homes of the local Dene people. Many hours are spent creating this one of a kind handmade basket.
