2019 MYLES KAKEGAMIC

Miles Kakegamic is a young emerging artist from the remote Sandy Lake Reserve in Northwestern Ontario. Born in Winnipeg in 1988, he was taken from his parents care at the age of twelve. Child and Family Services first placed him in a home in Sioux Lookout, where he remained for about one month before he was sent to a treatment group home in Consecon, Ontario. Feeling alone in an environment vastly different to the one he’d grown up in, he suffered a great deal from homesickness. He found relief in drawing airplanes in which he imagined himself travelling home to his loved ones. It was this compulsion that helped him develop an interest in First Nations arts and crafts.

By the age of 16, he was showing enough potential to impress his foster parents, Kathy and Dan McAlpine of Milford, Ontario. They decided to encourage his interest, and they began to purchase all the art supplies he required to hone his skills. Thanks to their support and his own determination, Kakegamic’s art can be seen in homes and corporations throughout Canada, including  Sudbury, Sioux lookout, Thunder Bay, Red Lake, Dryden, Kenora, Winnipeg, Thompson, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and Vancouver.

The artist’s preferred medium is acrylic on either paper or canvas. He paints in the Woodlands style, with a story motif captured in each of his works.
